A Connecticut-based organization called Wholesome Wave has a national initiative to allow doctors to prescribe high risk, low income families fruits and vegetables.  The patient gets health bucks that can be traded in at the local farmers market for their fruits and vegetables.  PLUS they also get nutritional counseling once and month.

“The program gives patients the ability to take a risk to do something good for themselves. It gives them control over their lives and the power to make healthy choices.”— Mike Lambke, Healthcare Provider

This is fantastic news for the low income families, HOWEVER what about everyone else.  If everyone ate a well balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables what do you think would happen to the percentage of chronic disease in this country?? Would it go up or down?  All the medication in the world is not going to solve the epidemic we are facing in this country!  If it takes a prescription of daily fruits and vegetables to get them in families homes and on their plates than all hospitals need to be adapting this program.
